Col John Henry Patterson

Col John Henry Patterson

From 1920 to 1948, Perfidious Albion did its best to prevent Zionism from gaining a foothold in the Land of Israel. Still, withing the British government and administration there were a handful of genuine pro-Zionist officials. This group includes Col Richard Meinertzhagen, about whom I have written in the past (use IsraPundit's search engine to find the relevant articles), Major General Orde Charles Wingate and Col John Henry Patterson.

An article in the JPost, Zionism's dashing pro-consul, reviews a newly-released book, about John Henry Patterson, a remarkable pro-Zionist British officer. The book is entitled, "Mad for Zion" by Patrick Streeter. Reading the JPost review is instructive in and of itself, because the review outlines many of the important events that were associated with Jewish Legion.

Beyond the specifics of the John Henry Patterson story, a question arises as to why Israel's supporters were, have been and are so few, while Israel's enemies are so numerous and omnipresent. What special characteristics distinguish the Pattersons of this world from the Bevins and the Livingstones? And what can be done to increase the number of the former while reducing the number of the latter?

Unfortunately, I have not read "Mad for Zion" so far, and consequently, I can only recommend the JPost article, but I will report on the book proper as soon as I obtain a copy.

There is some material about Col Patterson on the web, and there is an important reference to him in Netanyahu's opus magnum, "A Durable Peace".

The Feb 05 issue of THE JEWISH VETERAN Magazine has an article on John Henry Patterson by Yanky Fachler. I'm holding the refined pulp from trees issue but there is a web site at www.jwv.org (or try www.weconverted.com.).

Orde Wingate is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Every year there is a service for him at Arlington.
